Play with Height and Margin
One of the most common mistakes I see in singles is players trying to hit every shot too close to the lines. While it may feel aggressive, it usually leads to unnecessary errors and inconsistency under pressure.
The best players build points with smart targets, heavy margin, and consistency. Instead of aiming directly for the lines, aim 3–5 feet inside the court and focus on creating height over the net. That extra margin gives you more control, better recovery time, and puts constant pressure on your opponent.
A deep, heavy ball with shape is much more effective than going for a low-percentage winner too early in the rally. High-level tennis is about building the point patiently and making one more quality ball than your opponent.
KEY COACHING CUE
“Big targets create big confidence. Play with height, trust your patterns, and let consistency create opportunities.”
Try this in your next practice: during crosscourt rallies, challenge yourself to clear the net by 4–5 feet while keeping the ball deep past the service line. You’ll immediately notice better rhythm, improved consistency, and fewer unforced errors during pressure situations.
See you on the court!
